The HP2133 is a called a mini notebook by HP but other people will refer to it as a netbook or even a UMPC. What ever it's name, I bought one half a year ago and the following is my review.
First of all, HP made more than one type of the HP2133. The one I bought has a 1.2 Ghz processor and 1 Gb RAM memory. It also came with Windows Vista pre-installed. There are also versions with a 1.6 Ghz processor and some versions have 512 Mb memory. Some come with Windows XP or Linux pre-installed. Take a look at HP.com if you want to know all the different specifications. Although my HP2133 had Windows Vista pre-installed, I work with Windows XP now. I didn't have any complaints when I used Windows Vista on it. I think that a lot of people will find this operating system perfect for their needs. I installed Windows XP because I wanted to get the fastest configuration so I could try to play video's on it or even a game. Obviously with this configuration gaming is not an option but I tried anyway. And failed at it miserably. On the other hand, playing a movie with Media Player works fine for me on the HP2133.
Reasons to buy
There are a few reasons why you should buy the HP2133. There are also few reasons why you shouldn't buy it but I'll start with the former. The HP2133 is very well designed. You will notice this immediately when you take it out of it's box. By the way, it was almost the only thing that came with the box so no cd's/dvd's or other cool stuff. Too bad.
The design is very solid because of the aluminum exterior which also looks very good. The keyboard is 92% of a normal keyboard and it types just as good. The keys are really a delight to use. On both sides of the 8.9 inch screen are the speakers. You will be surprised about the quality of sound they produce!
In the front of the HP2133 there are two flip buttons. The right one is to turn Wifi on or off, the left button is for starting the HP2133 or turning it off. The mini has a USB port on both sides. It also has a memory card reader (SD) and a Kensington lock on the right panel. There's an additional VGA port on the left panel of the mini notebook.
Above the screen in the top panel there's a 1.3mp web cam so you can do video-conferencing with it.
With a nice 120gb hard disk you won't lack backup space either. Even with the lower speed 1.2 Ghz processor and a pretty normal amount of 1 Gb memory the mini notebook has a lot to offer in functionality.
Reasons not to buy
There are also a few reasons why you may not want to buy this particular device. One of it is the relatively low specifications in conjuction with Windows Vista. Also, when I bought mine it was very much overpriced. These reasons are not the most important though since the prices have gone down considerably and there are also better specifications available than I have.
A more important reason to not want this machine is the heat it produces. Although this is a common problem with notebooks and netbooks, I haven't seen one that produces the same amount of heat that the HP2133 does. A final drawback to the HP2133 is the relatively low battery life. You'll be happy with an 2 hour workout with the machine on it's 3 cell battery. Fortunately there's a 6 cell battery available.
Conclusion
The HP2133 mini notebook is not the cheapest of it's sort but I think it is one of the best. You need to make sure you'll buy the specification that best suits your needs. There are a few cons but most can be easily fixed. Only the heat is something you will have to learn to live with. The best feature of the HP2133 is it's sturdy design and the great keyboard. The large hard-disk and it's connectivity functions make this a good buy for anyone who's in the market for a quality mini notebook.
