Review: Gigabyte Umpc U60

Picture of a gigabyte u60

First impression

The display of the Gigabyte UMPC U60 is powered by the UniChrome Pro II graphics core. The U60 has a 6.5" touchscreen. The original resolution for this screen is 800 x 480 but you can also use it with a 1024 x 768-pixel resolution. The dimensions of the U60 are 190(W)x120.8(D)x28.3(H)mm and it weighs about 740g. It has a 2-cells Li-Ion battery.

Going in

The processor of the U60 is a 1GHz VIA processor and the ram memory is 768MB. You can not expand the memory so it is advised to stick with the default operating system, Windows XP and not to upgrade to Windows Vista. Vista will need about 1GB of Ram to run smoothly. If you don't like Windows XP you can try Linux. Most Linux type operating systems need less resources than Windows XP so these should run fine. Of course you need to make sure that the U60 and it's components are supported by Linux. You can check the Gigabyte website for more information and drivers.

The U60 has a webcam which is positioned right above the LCD screen. The webcam has 300K Pixel resolution. You can use the webcam to make low quality pictures or for videoconferencing.
The battery should last for about 3.5 hours. This isn't much less than the 4 hours the manufacturer claims. The work you do with the U60 and your settings can greatly influence the battery time.
The Gigabyte UMPC U60 isn't a machine to be used to work with all day because of it's size. It is ideal for quickly editing text, emailing and internet. This can be done using the built-in IEEE 802.11 b/g wireless network. It also has Bluetooth capability.

When you use the U60 you will find that it will run hot after a while. This is not uncommon for notebooks, netbooks and UMPC's. You can still work pretty comfortable with the U60.
Another thing you will quickly realize when using the decive is it's keyboard. It is split in two parts so you can work with both your hands and you don't need to hold it with one hand and type with the other. Another input feature of the U60 is the mini Touchpad on the right-bottom corner. There's also a touch control pen you can use.

Expansions

There are various expansion possibilities. The expansion port is located under the flip stand of the Gigabyte UMPC U60. There are several accesssories you can connect to the device like GPS and even a TV tuner. There's also a slot at the bottom for use with the docking station. The dockingstation adds a good amout of extra functionality with VGA output, 10/100 Ethernet port, three USB 2.0 ports and headphone jack.

Conclusion

All in all, the U60 has a lot to offer to it's user. For one, it has great functionality especially in the connectivity department. With two USB ports, Bluetooth and Wifi there's always a way to connect to other devices or the internet. With the SD card reader you can also get files from other devices easily on your U60. The GPS function is a great addition to the U60.
